Collection of the American Arkology Society, No. 1886.54

Location: Black Jack, Heartland Zone. Present-day Missouri.

The soldiers seen here, from the Heartland Zone’s 3rd Pathfinders Company, await extraction along Route 67 in the northern suburbs of St. Louis. As Great Lakes Zone forces poured over the zone’s southern border toward St. Louis in March of NE05, some 2,500 HLZ soldiers found themselves trapped in what came to be called the Black Jack Pocket. GLZ forces closed the pocket in September, killing or capturing all but the 800 soldiers who managed to break out of the encirclement.

References to Apex Bank, an advertisement for which appears on the billboard in this scene, have been found in Arks unearthed across the United States. These discoveries have bolstered arkologists’ theories about the existence of a multizone economic system despite ongoing military conflicts.

Wounded Soldier
The Black Jack Pocket debacle was a stinging defeat for Heartland Zone forces, which lost over 1,000 soldiers when the Great Lakes Zone’s 3rd Regiment, commanded by General Jennifer Dean, crossed the Missouri River in an attempt to capture St. Louis.
